Growth of the Police State:
“Let me see your papers.”
by: Sidra Owens
I know that everyone has seen at least one movie that takes place in Nazi Germany or Communist Russia or the Pro-slavery south. The situation usually arises where the sacrificial lamb of the story is walking along, minding their business and a soldier or some authority figure stops them, and says, “Let me see your identification. Or let me see your papers.” And what happens? The protagonist hands over their papers, and either they are examined and they are allowed to pass, or the authority makes some denigrating remarks and takes them into custody for doing nothing more than walking.
Now, let us open our eyes and look around at the country that we currently live in. The majority of police departments are highly militarized; trading in community outreach for tanks and body armor. We, as citizens, are guilty until proven innocent, having no rights to due process. We may not even ask an officer, why we are being stopped? It is better now to bow one’s head and follow every order, so that maybe you can get home to your loved ones. But now, after an illegal search and seizure case went all the way to the supreme court, our fair and illustrious supreme court has decided the evidence in this case, obtained via an illegal search (without a warrant) is now admissible in court; trampling on the fourth amendment, our rights as citizens and securing the boot of police authority firmly on the back of our necks.
Has anyone been informed about this? No. The establishment media will not cover it. They will talk about Trump, and how much money he has for his campaign, and what his campaign manager did or did not steal. But not the fact that, as it currently stands, the police can come to your house, demand your identification, illegally check for warrants and if they find one, no matter how benign, they can arrest you and proceed to search your house, your car, your clothes, whatever, use what they find against you and the supreme court set a precedent for it being okay. Probable cause?? Who gives a shit.
I would like to say that this is the beginning of a fascist police state, but we are well past the beginning. Minorities and the poor have been dealing with it in silence for years, but our information age has brought all this to the forefront. Along with all the cases where rich whites can batter, defraud, rape and kill people and they get off with house arrest or six months in jail, since incarceration would be detrimental to their lives. What about our lives? What about your life? Shouldn’t you receive the same treatment as the wealthy, no matter your skin color, where you live or how much money you earn?
And what can we do about it? Can I offer a solution? Honestly, I can’t because I don’t have one. Too many have been killed by police or died in police custody and it’s all been swept under the rug. Judges are against us, prosecutors are against us, and the police lead the pack. I know that I feel ill at ease when the police ride past me. I don’t know what to do to change it, and I would hate for others to put themselves in harm’s way to change it. So where does that leave us? It should leave us in a state of preparation. Get your ID in order, because before long you might be driving or walking, and when they pull you over and ask you, “Where are your papers?” Keep your head low and have your ID on a spring, without delay. Maybe then you will escape the situation alive.
